Preventing Cyberbullying

When youngsters get used to using mobile phones, computers and the Internet for learning, entertaining, socialising and venting their emotions, web surfing has become an important part of young people’s life. They may immediately feel that life is meaningless if the platform provided by the Internet ceases to exist.

Teenagers nowadays rely on online social platform to interact and communicate, and exchange and share information with each other. Forgetting to protect privacy of their own or others, they endlessly update their information on Facebook, freely add strangers to their friend list and never reject any invitations, sometimes even have competitions like whose Facebook is more popular among Internet users, or who have more friends. Without any consideration, some teenagers express their emotions directly on Facebook, or upload photos or modified photos just for fun. Although they may not have an intention to hurt others, a large number of people would know when they update their information or photographs as the network is expanding. These unintentional behaviours may result in cyberbullying, and may have already committed other criminal offenses. All these would have a significant influence on teenagers.

After the overwhelmingly well-received workshop “A Roadmap for Safer Internet at Home Project”, which was the home-school co-operation project last year, we would like to introduce to our parents further knowledge on social networking websites. This year, we have the honour to invite Ms. Christa Cheung from the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups as the speaker of the talk “Preventing Cyberbullying”. Graduated from the Department of Social Work and Social Administration, University of Hong Kong, Ms. Cheung is a senior social worker at the “Be NETWISE” Family Support Centre who has extensive experience in organising educational activities for safety on the Internet.

All children have the right to use the Internet safely and free from any threat. Through this home-school co-operation project, we wish to work with parents, so as to provide the best support to students at home and at school to ensure their healthy development.

Date:      January 10, 2012 (Tuesday)
Time:     6:30 – 8:00p.m.
